A former fishing village on the North Sea coast of Aberdeenshire, Collieston lies 3 miles (5 km) north of the estuary of the Ythan River at the northern end of the Sands of Forvie. Once famous for its 'speldings' or haddocks dried in the rock and much frequented by smugglers, Collieston is now largely given over to tourists during the summer months. The village was visited by T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) who, on leave from RAF duty, rented a cottage which he described as 'the nearest hovel to the high-tide mark'.
