A hamlet in the Buchan district of Aberdeenshire, Rathen lies in a parish of the same name, 4 miles (6 km) south of Fraserburgh. Mormond Hill rises to the southwest and to the north passes the Water of Philorth on its way to Fraserburgh Bay. A spired church built in 1868 replaced an earlier kirk whose churchyard was the burial place of the grandparents of the Norwegian composer Edvard Greig.
