Benholm

Aberdeenshire

A scattered rural settlement in a SE Aberdeenshire parish of the same name, Benholm lies near the North Sea coast to the southwest of Inverbervie. It comprises the hamlet of Benholm, Nether Benholm, Stone of Benholm and the 18th C. Benholm Mill, the only surviving water-powered meal mill in the Kincardine area of Aberdeenshire. Once a thriving settlement, its fortunes and population declined with the importance of agriculture. The 1950s saw the closure of the smiddy and in 1968 the school closed. The village hall was sold in 1972 and demolished in 1992. The post office closed in 1988 and Benholm Kirk in 2004. Benholm was designated as a Conservation Area in 2006.
