A location on the edge of the Braes of Angus, Inverquharity lies between the River South Esk and Quharity Burn, 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Kirriemuir. Inverquharity Castle, which dates from the 15th Century and was restored in the 1960s, was a stronghold of the Ogilvies until the early 18th century.
