A village in Angus, Hillside lies 3 miles (5 km) to the northwest of Montrose. Situated on sloping ground with fine views, it developed in the 19th Century as a summer retreat of the residents of Montrose who built villas there. Hillside Primary School closed in 2000.

Lying to the north of the village, Sunnyside Royal Hospital, originally founded in 1757 as the Sunnyside Asylum, was a pioneering establishment in the treatment of mental illness.
