Newton Mearns

East Renfrewshire

A small town in East Renfrewshire, Newton Mearns lies 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Glasgow. Possibly dating from the 14th century, it was created a burgh of barony in 1621 not far from Mearns Castle, a former stronghold of the Maxwells. The settlement is largely residential and has three 18-hole golf courses and one of Scotland's few synagogues. Newton Mearns was bypassed in 1996 by the new M77 motorway.
