Milton

West Dunbartonshire

Now absorbed into Duntocher, a northern suburb of Clydebank, Milton lies on the opposite side of the Duntocher Burn, a half-mile (0.8 km) west of Hardgate. The site of the Dalnotter Iron Works in the 18th century, the settlement was the focus for cotton-spinning in the 19th century. The iron works went into decline when it lost its principal market after the American War of Independence and, in 1813, the site was purchased by William Dunn, a Kirkintilloch industrialist and redeveloped as a cotton mill. A crash in this industry was precipitated by the unavailability of the raw material during the American Civil War and the mill was finally destroyed by a fire in 1886.
