Situated on the River Stinchar in South Ayrshire, the village of Colmonell (pronounced com-mon-ell) lies 10 miles (16 km) south of Girvan. Nearby are the remains of several castles including Kirkhill (1589), Craigneil (13th-century) and Knockdolian. The area is associated with the Kennedies of Bargany.
