Carinish

(Cairinis, Chairinis)
Western Isles

A hamlet in the southwest of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Carinish (Gael: Cairinis or Chairinis) is located 7½ miles (12 km) southwest of Lochmaddy. Carinish benefits from a Gaelic-medium primary school and a village hall, built in 1957 and significantly upgraded in 2001. Carinish was once the terminal of the ferry to Benbecula, but the ferry was replaced by the North Ford Causeway which opened in 1960. In 1601, the Battle of Carinish saw the defeat of a raiding part of MacLeods from Skye by the resident MacDonalds. The ruins of the early 13th-century Temple of the Trinity (Gael: Teampall na Trionaid) lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the southwest.
