NATO Station, Balado

A small modern settlement in Perth and Kinross, Balado is situated a mile (1.5 km) to the west of Kinross on the A977 trunk road from Kinross to the Kincardine Bridge. Prior to the building of the village in the 1980s the name Balado was associated with Balado House and the farms of Balado Farm West, Middle Balado and Easter Balado. An 18th Century high-arched bridge crosses the South Queich here and to the north of the village is the Balado Bridge NATO Communications Facility known locally as the "Golf Ball", in the corner of what was once RAF Balado, a World War II airfield. This facility was decommissioned and sold in 2006. The popular T in the Park music festival came here from Strathclyde Country Park in 1997, to be staged on other parts of the former airfield. It moved to Strathallan Castle in 2015 following fears relating to underground oil and gas pipelines which runs beneath the Balado site. Gravel extraction and later chicken farming industries have developed nearby.
