A district, former village and old barony in NE Edinburgh, Broughton lies a half-mile (1 km) north northeast of the city centre. The Barony became the property of the Heriot Trust in 1636, when it lay on the northern outskirts of Edinburgh. Broughton was absorbed into the city with the building of the New Town in the 18th and 19th centuries. The resulting modern district is less residential in character than the New Town to the W, with several industrial premises and units. Lothian Buses Headquarters and Central Depot is located here on Annandale Street. Street names such as Broughton Street and Broughton Place are reminders of the old village which lay on the road linking Edinburgh to North Leith. Edinburgh's modest gay district (known as the Pink Triangle) extends from Broughton Street, across Picardy Place to Greenside.
The poet Christopher Grieve, alias Hugh MacDiarmid (1892 - 1978), was a student teacher at Broughton High School which moved to a new location west of Inverleith Park in the 1960s.
