A granite-built village on the frontier of Moray and Aberdeenshire, the Milltown of Rothiemay lies on the River Deveron 5 miles (8 km) north of Huntly. The noted 17th Century cartographer John Gordon officiated in St Dunstan's Church which was replaced in 1807 by a plain whinstone kirk. Rothiemay Castle once stood to the east and a kiln barn is thought to have been associated with whisky distilling in the 17th century. A bridge across the Deveron designed by John Willet was built in 1872 and an earlier bridge known as Queen Mary's Bridge dates from the mid-16th century.
