Westhill

Aberdeenshire

A commuter settlement in E Aberdeenshire, Westhill lies 3 miles (5 km) east of the Loch of Skene and 6 miles (10 km) west of Aberdeen. It was created in 1968 as a new town and was rapidly developed in the 1970s to meet housing demand during the early days of North Sea oil development. It expanded to include the settlement of Elrick and became a centre for construction, timber and oil-related industries. The headquarters of the Stewart Milne house-building group is located here. There is an 18-hole golf course as well as library, schools, swimming pool, shopping centre and tennis and bowling facilities. Two gold-painted pillar boxes on Westhill Drive commemorate the gold medals won by rower Tim Baillie at the London Olympics of 2012.
