A suburb of Cumbernauld in North Lanarkshire, Eastfield lies 1½ miles (2.5 km) west of the town centre. Eastfield began as a hamlet located next to the modern M80 motorway, just to the south of Eastfield Cemetery, which remains extant. By the middle of the 20th C., Eastfield Holdings had been developed to give ex-servicemen employment on the land. The Holdings were strung out for more than 1½ miles (2.5 km) beyond Balloch Farm and towards Condorrat. The name Eastfield was applied to public housing built in the mid-1970s as part of Cumbernauld New Town and its location, a mile (1.8 km) west southwest from the original core, is explained by the extended nature of the agricultural holdings. The streets are named after Scottish mountains; namely Ben Lawers, Ben Ledi, Ben More, Ben Nevis, Ben Venue, Cairngorm, Cairntoul and Grampian. Facilities include a library, a post office and Eastfield Primary School. Given the confusion of the two parts on either side of the more recent Balloch development, the entire area tends to be referred to as Balloch-Eastfield.
