Auchterneed

Highland

A hamlet in Easter Ross, Highland Council Area, Auchterneed lies on the Allt Dearg, a mile (1.5 km) north of Strathpeffer. Auchterneed was established by the Cromarty Estate in the mid-19th Century to absorb people removed from the nearby glens. In legend it is associated with the annual ball of the Gaels which was held on the Raven's Rock, a place where they are said to have learned the secret art of mouth music played to them by the captured King of the Ravens.
