Burdiehouse

City of Edinburgh

A residential suburb and former village on the southern outskirts of Edinburgh, Burdiehouse lies to the south of Liberton. Its original name is said to have been Bordeaux House, a place of residence for some of Mary Queen of Scots's retinue in 1561. Stuart Harris disputes this in his 'Place Names of Edinburgh' (1996) and the settlement certainly seems distant from other places Mary's entourage is known to have stayed (Little France). Limestone was formerly quarried and burned in kilns nearby which are still extant. The green-belt land around these workings is now occupied by a 600-house development by Barratt Homes, known as 'The Kilns' (2014).
