A village of Argyll and Bute, Dalmally lies at the junction of Glen Orchy, Glen Lochy and Glen Strae, near the point where the River Orchy flows into Loch Awe. Its whitewashed octagonal church was built in 1811 by the 4th Earl of Breadalbane and in the 19th century the village developed in association with the railway and tourist steamers on Loch Awe. The Dalmally Hotel began as an inn in 1782 but was extended 1844 and 1995. A railway station was built here in 1877 on the West Highland Line to Oban. In the 20th century a livestock market and agricultural show emerged and between 1962 and 1966 the Cruachan Hydro Power Scheme was created 5 miles (8 km) to the west. On a hill overlooking Dalmally stands the McIntyre Monument commemorating the illiterate Gaelic poet Duncan Ban McIntyre (1724 - 1812).
