Benslie

(Benslee, Bensley)
North Ayrshire

A hamlet of North Ayrshire, Benslie (once Benslee or Bensley) lies to the east of the Lugton Water 2 miles (3 km) east of Kilwinning and 2½ miles (4 km) northeast of Irvine. There were small coal pits around the settlement, with the larger Fergushill Colliery to the north. Benslie Wood lies immediately to the southeast. Most of the housing in Benslie is modern. Fergushill Church occupies a prominent position on a ridge at the eastern end of the settlement. This was built in 1879 but, having fallen from use, is now a private residence.
