A village on the west coast of Lewis in the Western Isles, Callanish (Calanais) lies at the head of East Loch Roag, 13 miles (21 km) west of Stornoway. On a low ridge close by is one of Scotland's most spectacular prehistoric ceremonial centres comprising a small circle of 13 standing stones which form the focus of four rows of stones to the north, south, east and west. Within the circle is a tall pillar, 4.75m (16 feet) in height, beside a small chambered tomb.
