A location in Nithsdale (Dumfries and Galloway), Craigenputtock lies 5 miles (8 km) south of Moniaive. It comprises two farms, Craigenputtock and Nether Craigenputtock on the edge of Craigenputtock Moor. The former was home to the Welsh family for several generations, and Jane Welsh Carlyle (1801-66) and her husband, the author Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881), lived here between 1828 and 1834. Carlyle referred to the farm as Craigenputtoch.
The Craigenputtock Burn flows southwest to join the Urr Water.
