A small village in the Roxburgh district of the Scottish Borders, Minto lies between the River Teviot and the Minto Hills, 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Hawick and 3 miles (5 km) west of Jedburgh. Nearby Minto House, designed by the architect William Adam and built in 1738-43 for Lord Minto, was abandoned in 1966 and demolished in 1992. A member of that family, Jean Elliot (1727 - 1805), wrote the famous lament, The Flowers of the Forest.
