A village in the Berwickshire district of the Scottish Borders, Paxton lies on the Whiteadder Water near the border with England, 4 miles (6.5 km) west of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The Palladian-style Paxton House, a half-mile (1 km) to the south, was built in 1758 for Patrick Home to a design by John and James Adam. Situated amidst 32 ha (80 acres) of gardens, parkland and woodland, Paxton House contains a fine collection of furniture and paintings. In 1811 a picture gallery designed by Robert Reid was added to the house which since 1993 has been an out-station of the National Galleries of Scotland. In the policies are a restored Victorian boathouse and a fisheries museum.
