Kirknewton

West Lothian

A dormitory settlement in West Lothian, Kirknewton lies to the west of the Pentland Hills, 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Edinburgh. It developed in the late 19th C. in association with quarrying and oil shale mining, although the parish church was begun in 1750 and rebuilt in 1872. Kirknewton House dates from the 17th C. but is only a fraction of what stood here until the 1950s. Ormiston Hall (1851) lies to the southwest. Hillfield House, which lies immediately to the east of the village, was built in the later 18th C. A military airfield established during the Second World War is now used as a gliding school.
