Oakbank

West Lothian

A small settlement of West Lothian, Oakbank is situated a half-mile (1 km) to the southeast of Mid Calder and lies on the banks of the Linhouse Water. The village was begun in the 1860s to provide accommodation for the workers at the adjacent Oakbank Oil Works and grew to more than 100 homes, comprising rows of single and two-storey brick-built dwellings, with a village hall, school, football pitch and bowling green. It declined following the closure of the oil-shale works in 1932 and was progressively demolished between the 1950s and 1980s. The bowling green and football pitch remain. More recently there were large poultry sheds associated with Oakbank Farm. Oakbank Business Park lies a half-mile (1 km) to the west, on the southeastern edge of Livingston.

Oakbank Bing, the spoil from the oil-shale works, was stabilised in the early 1990s and now forms part of the Almondell and Calderwood Country Park.
