Western Isles

A location at the northern end of the island of Great Bernera off the NW coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Bosta (Gael: Bostadh) lies 2¼ miles (3.5 km) north northwest of Breaclete. It comprises the headland of Siram Bosta, the white shell sand of Bosta Bay, a sizeable cemetery, which serves the entire island and includes several war-graves, a car park and deserted township, including two corn-mills, which was abandoned by the mid-19th century. An even older settlement, the Bosta Iron Age Village, was uncovered by storms in 1993 and subsequently excavated and interpreted by archaeologists.
