Ormiclate

(Ormaclett, Ormacleit)
Western Isles

A scattered crofting settlement, with a ruined 18th century castle, Ormiclate (also Ormaclett, Gael: Ormacleit) lies in the machair on the west coast of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, 3 miles (5 km) south of Howmore and a similar distance north of Mingarry. Ormiclate Castle was home of the MacDonalds of Clanranald but accidentally burned in 1715, only seven years after its completion and never rebuilt.
