A somewhat drab former mining village in N Midlothian, Newton Village lies a half-mile (1 km) east of Danderhall and 4 miles (6.5 km) southeast of Edinburgh. The village developed in conjunction with Woolmet Colliery and later the Monktonhall Colliery, which lay just behind the village and closed in 1998. Newton House lies a mile (1.5 km) to the east and the ruins of old Newton Church lie a half-mile (1 km) south of that.
