Auchenshuggle

Glasgow City

A location in E Glasgow, Auchenshuggle lies south of Tollcross and west of Fullarton, 4 miles (6 km) southeast of the city centre. The site of a small settlement in the 19th century, this oddly-named location came to prominence in 1922 as the eastern terminus of the No. 9 tram, which ran from Dalmuir (West Dunbartonshire), via Yoker, Scotstoun and Partick through the city centre to Auchenshuggle until 1962. The curious began to take this tram solely to visit what became a quintessentially Scottish place-name. The famous tram was replaced by the No. 64 bus which still makes the journey every half-hour to Auchenshuggle.

Latterly, with a slightly different spelling, Auchenshoogle became the fictional hometown of D.C. Thomson's famous cartoon character Oor Wullie.
