Ellen's Glen

(Stenhouse)
City of Edinburgh

A small district of S Edinburgh, Ellen's Glen lies between Liberton and Gilmerton, 4 miles (6.5 km) southeast of the city centre. From the late 19th C. the name Ellen's Glen was applied only to the buildings in the valley of the Burdiehouse Burn. However, in the late 1960s, the name was extended to include the settlement once known as Stenhouse located above the junction of the Stenhouse Burn with the Burdiehouse Burn. Thus Stenhouse Road became Ellen's Glen Road to avoid confusion with another Stenhouse in the west of the city.

There was once a mill here, but the district is now principally residential in character, but with the Liberton Hospital and former Southfield Hospital (which closed in 1999) located here. The Scottish Blood Transfusion service has laboratories adjacent to the Liberton Hospital. The last remaining link with its previous incarnation is Stennis Gardens, using an old form of the name.
