A growing suburb and business park in N Midlothian, wedged between the City of Edinburgh and East Lothian, centred between Danderhall and Millerhill. Shown on the 1854 Ordnance Survey map as a farm, it was dominated by an industrial site with the development of the Monktonhall Colliery in the 1950s. Following the closure of the colliery in 1998, Shawfair is set to become a 4800-home community as part of a ten-year redevelopment of the area. While economic conditions have delayed the housing development, the first phase of a related office development known as Shawfair Park, was completed in 2008, alongside a major park-and-ride facility. The land was part of the Duke of Buccleuch's Dalkeith House estate and has been developed by Buccleuch Property, one of Europe's largest private landlords. The Shawfair Park Hospital opened in 2010 while the Scottish Qualifications Authority, the national body responsible for accrediting educational qualifications, moved here from nearby Dalkeith the following year. A railway station opened here on the new Borders Railway in 2015 and residential development began the following year, surrounding Newton Village.
