A hamlet which grew up around a former station on the Kilmarnock-Dumfries-Gretna railway, Ruthwell Station (formerly known as Plans) is located a half-mile (1 km) north of Clarencefield and 1¼ miles (2 km) south southwest of Carrutherstown in Dumfries and Galloway. The line remains open, but the station closed in 1965 and its buildings are now residences in private hands.
