Morelaggan

Argyll and Bute

A location on the northeast shore of Loch Long in Argyll and Bute, Morelaggan lies on the A814 road a mile (1.5 km) north of DM Glen Douglas and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) southwest of Arrochar. The name first appears in the record in 1514 and is shown on Pont's map (c.1592) and that of Roy in 1750. Until the 19th century the name referred to a settlement higher up the slopes, now abandoned and known as High Morelaggan, which was home to at least four families. The artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton (1821 - 1901) painted a view of High Morelaggan in 1875, while local residents have recently explored the history of the settlement as part of a community project (2008).
