Barlocco


Dumfries and Galloway

A location on the S coast of Dumfries and Galloway, Barlocco lies 3½ miles (4 km) east southeast of Dundrennan and a similar distance south southwest of Auchencairn. There is a mansion here, with Barlocco Hill rising to 149m (488 feet) behind. The mineral barytes was mined here from before 1850 until 1862, and evidence of adits and shafts remain. Barlocco Bay lies a half-mile (0.8 km) to the southeast, while Barlocco Heugh is a section of the coast to the west. The Caves of Barlocco were once popular with smugglers and are mentioned in Sir Walter Scott's Guy Mannering.

There is another Barlocco 12½ miles (20 km) to the west.
