Loch an Eilean and Rothiemurchus Forest

An estate and forest in the Badenoch and Strathspey district of Highland Council Area, Rothiemurchus lies between the Cairngorm Mountains and the River Spey. Owned by the Grant family since the middle of the 16th century, the estate is unusual in that it remains intact within the same boundaries today. It comprises native pinewood and moorland extending southwards along Gleann Einich and eastwards to Loch Morlich, with some of the finest and largest remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest and associated wildlife. William Patrick Grant, the 10th Laird of Rothiemurchus, did much to improve the estate, including building roads, bridges and flood protection embankments along the River Spey.

Today, the estate is commercially successful in-part through public access, with 300,000 visitors per year. It receives around £250,000 annually from state agencies to support conservation of its unique environment and promote access. There is a visitor centre at Inverdruie, hotel and camping facilities at Coylumbridge and facilities for fishing, clay pigeon shooting, mountain biking and wildlife watching. There are numerous footpaths including a walk round Loch an Eilein.
