Scarva Taing

A little headland on the northwestern coast of Deerness in Orkney, Scarva Taing is located at the entrance to Deer Sound, 8 miles (13 km east of Kirkwall. It was here in 1679 that more than 200 Covenanting prisoners drowned when the ship transporting them to the American Colonies ran aground in a storm. Many were buried nearby and the event is commemorated by the Covenanters' Memorial. Rather than being condemned to deportation to the Colonies, a few survivors began new lives in Orkney.
