Biggar Water

(Biggar Burn)

A stream rising as the Biggar Burn at the southern end of the Pentland Hills in the South Lanarkshire parish of Biggar, the Biggar flows south and southwest past the town of Biggar before turning east to continue for 5 miles (8 km) as the Biggar Water. It passes through the village of Broughton and joins the Tweed near Drumelzier. The Pentland Hills are separated from the Culter Hills to the south by the Biggar Gap, a glacial breach that forms a flat hollow 7 miles (11 km) in length, linking the Clyde and Tweed valleys. This glacial breach was probably formed by ice moving eastwards during the Ice Age.
