A settlement in South Lanarkshire, Dungavel lies 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Strathaven. It developed in association with H.M. Prison Dungavel, which incarcerated category 'C' offenders serving a maximum sentence of 12 years, but closed in July 2000, only to re-open the following year as a specialist centre for asylum-seekers.
